Cabspotting at New York MoMA’s Full Disclosure: The Edge of Information Design

Cabspotting, a pioneering work of interactive art made with Stamen Design and Amy Balkin in 2005, is returning to view at MoMA in New York starting September 27 in a new show called Full Disclosure: The Edge of Information Design. Cabspotting entered MoMA’s collection in 2008 and is now back on the gallery floor alongside other work exploring how designers help us make sense of an increasingly complex, data-driven world.

Using anonymous GPS data from San Francisco’s Yellow Cabs, Cabspotting work draws an alternate map of the Bay Area based on where cabs go—and where they rarely appear. Their paths reveal economic, social, and cultural patterns normally invisible, while turning surveillance technology toward an awareness of all the lives unfolding around us at once.
